This painting shows the Gothic, CO, townsite as seen from the trail to Judd Falls. Gothic is the current home of the internationally recognized Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory. Gothic, once a mining "boom town," had by the late 1800's become a ghost town. It was purchased in 1927 for back taxes (about $250) by Dr. John C. Johnson, head of the biology dept. at Western State College in nearby Gunnison, CO. Dr. Johnson's forward thinking lead to the development of this outstanding high altitude research facility which today attracts top science researchers from all over the world.
I have been seriously involved in watercolor painting for the last 20 years following retirement from my public school teaching career. Having the time to paint, along with the freedom from the need to make a living at the same time, has opened many wonderful new opportunities, friendships and experiences for me. I am a frequent exhibitor in art shows at the local, regional, state and national levels, having been honored to receive numerous awards for my work. My painting style is realistic. I am drawn to detail and favor the use of vivid color. I enjoy painting a variety of subject matter, but the glorious world of nature is what seems to suit me best. Many of my paintings reflect time spent outdoors, especially in the mountains...
